My children are in the other room eating dinner. Current topic is debating the merits of the 3-second rule vs. the 7-second rule for dropping food on the floor.
Current conclusion is that the 3-second rule has less risk of germs but it's not enough time to actually bend over and pick up the dropped food.

Hmmm.. I read a report somewhere in the last year or so that for apple slices it's 30 seconds and for Skittles and the like, it's several minutes. You'll just have to wash off the apple slice.

I read an article that said children aren't exposed to enough germs during childhood and thus are developing adult asthma and immune disorders. If you really loved your trio, you'd step on the food and then make them eat it - the number of seconds is of secondary concern.
I'm with Alison. One of my contributions to my nephews' health is to let them come over and roll around on my dirty floors and eat food they've dropped and fought off the dog for. Their parents will thank me one day.
